Janitor

Temporary full-time (40 hours per week) until March 31, 2021; must be willing to work Saturdays & Sundays

General Manager

Summary

The Janitor will be responsible for keeping buildings in clean and orderly condition, and will perform heavy cleaning duties, such as cleaning floors, washing walls and glass, and removing rubbish. Duties may include tending to minor routine maintenance activities, notifying management of need for repairs, and cleaning snow or debris from sidewalk. The Janitor will also play a role in performing laundry duties for the shelters.

Job Duties

  • Locks or unlocks doors, turns lights on/off
  • Performs general clean-up of all facilities
  • Sweeps, mops, polishes floor areas; dumps garbage and recycling bins, performs all cleaning aspects of halls, offices, board rooms, restrooms, lunchroom and classrooms as well as washing walls, windows, and window coverings. Performs cleaning duties in Lighthouse shelter areas and kitchen.
  • Cleans light fixtures and changes bulbs/tubes as required
  • Contacts appropriate maintenance service personnel for major repairs
  • Responsible for vandalism clean-up and repair within skill level
  • Maintains and/or has working knowledge of environmental safeguards and alarm systems
  • Helps set up rooms for meetings, parties, or various other activities and cleans up afterwards
  • Plan and prioritize work for self
  • Determine needed supplies and equipment; communicate needs with supervisor
  • Monitor need for equipment maintenance and repair; communicate with supervisor
  • Collect & remove debris/litter from exterior of property including sidewalks and alleyways
  • Responsible for proper inventory of materials and supplies
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates ability to perform the duties and responsibilities as described
  • Familiarity with and ability to perform wide variety of janitorial duties
  • Fluent in English (verbal and written)
  • WHMIS 2015
  • Willingness to obtain additional training as needed

Work Conditions

  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases and conditions.
  • Interacts with residents, staff, partners, as well as government/community agencies and personnel.
  • Hazards associated with the trade
  • Work both indoors and outdoors
