Position Details: This is a part-time position for 350 hours total; must work at least 12 hours per week

To be eligible to apply, candidates must meet the following criteria(as per the Canada Summer Jobs Program):

The Cook is responsible for prepping and cooking food served cafeteria style for up to 60+ people staying at The Lighthouse’s shelter, as well as individuals from the community. General kitchen and cleaning duties are also required. This individual must be self-motivated and able to work independently, as well as in a team environment.

Job Duties

  • Prepare and serve three meals per shift (breakfast, lunch, supper) to clients staying at The Lighthouse, and to members of the community
  • Perform regular cleaning duties for all areas of kitchen as scheduled by Shelter Manager on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis
  • Prepare, season and cook food as directed, meeting dietary requirements where required
  • Follow recipes and presentation specifications
  • Operate standard kitchen equipment safely and efficiently
  • Clean and maintain station in practicing good safety and sanitation
  • Oversee kitchen operations
  • Maintain inventory and record of food, supplies and equipment
  • Adhere to all sanitation and food production codes


  • Experience prepping and cooking food
  • Food Safe Certificate is required
  • Ability to work independently and follow instructions
  • Ability to work in a team alongside other kitchen staff and volunteers
  • Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Clearance

Work Conditions

  • This position requires 8-hour shifts, to serve three meals/day to clients and residents
  • Involves combination of weekday and weekend shifts – must be willing to work weekends
  • Stands and prepares/serves food for up to 8 hours a day with minimal sitting time

Job Types: Part-time, Temporary

Salary: $13.00 per hour
